Salsa Cycles was founded in 1982 by Ross Shafer, a bike racer and frame builder who wanted to make bikes for adventure. They’ve been owned by Quality Bicycle Products (QBP) since 1997, which means they have the resources of a large company with the culture of a small one. The adventure-first ethos is genuine — Salsa sponsors bikepacking routes, expedition riders, and endurance events, not just race teams.
Their gravel bikes are consistently some of the most respected in the category. The Warbird has been a reference point for gravel race geometry for years, and the Cutthroat was one of the first bikes designed specifically for multi-day gravel events like Unbound. These are bikes for people who ride for days, not just hours.
The MTB side of Salsa is less well known but equally capable — the Blackthorn and Spearfish are legitimate trail bikes from a brand that actually bikepacks with their products.
