Founded on April Fools' Day in 1981, Ibis Cycles began as a dream in the heart of Scot Nicol, just east of Mendocino, California. Starting with no money and no concrete plan, Nicol established Ibis with a vision of creating exceptional bicycles. Today, Ibis Cycles operates in Santa Cruz with a passionate team of around 40 individuals. The company is unique in that all five owners actively work within the organization: Hans Heim as CEO, Tom Morgan as President, Colin Hughes leading the engineering department, designer Roxy Lo, and founder Scot Nicol.

In the early days, Nicol sought inspiration from an Audubon bird encyclopedia, aiming to associate the qualities of lightness and flight with bicycles. Several bird-themed names were considered, with Ibis being the chosen one. This decision set the stage for a company that has stood the test of time, avoiding the fate of other brands swallowed up by corporate giants.
